Yes, your inventory is insured as long as it’s in the warehouse. The exact terms and conditions are part of the agreements you make and are outlined in the contract and the terms and conditions. Be sure to review that section before you sign, because it’s the part you’ll only need when things go wrong.
Why You Should Look Into This Yourself
“Insured” is not an answer you can rely on without knowing the terms and conditions. It all depends on what is covered, up to what amount, and based on what value. That varies by provider, and it’s one of the few topics where the differences only become apparent after something has happened.
Questions You Ask
- What does the inventory cover?
- Is the calculation based on the purchase price or the selling price?
- Is there a maximum limit per event or per period?
- What do you need to provide to support a claim?
- What are the rules for inventory that is on its way to the warehouse?
Your inventory remains yours
The fact that you don't store it yourself doesn't change who owns it. It's your inventory, just at a different location. That's why it's also your responsibility to know how it's insured, just as you would if it were in your own warehouse.
Keep Your Records in Order
In the event of a claim, the investigation will focus on what was in stock and what it was worth. You’ll need to support this with your own purchase invoices and inventory levels. Be sure to check those levels regularly in your account so that your figures are accurate when it matters most.
Transportation is something else
Once a package has been handed over, it is in the care of an external carrier, and that carrier’s terms and conditions and liability apply. This is a separate aspect of insuring your inventory. For high-value items, it’s wise to discuss in advance which shipping service is appropriate.
Be sure to review your own policy as well
If you have your own business or property insurance, be sure to notify your insurer that your inventory is stored elsewhere. Insurers have specific requirements regarding this, and you don’t want to find out that your coverage has lapsed because the address is incorrect.
Define special values in advance
If you have items of exceptionally high value, please specify them separately during the intake process. What is reasonable for an average inventory is not necessarily reasonable for a small batch of items with a high value per piece.
Please let us know if you change the value
If you plan to sell higher-priced items, or if you’re temporarily stocking a much larger inventory for a campaign, please let us know. A coverage level suitable for an average product range won’t necessarily be appropriate for a peak demand that’s three times higher.
