How do recurring orders affect your inventory planning?

Regular customers make your demand predictable, but also unforgiving: anyone who orders the same thing every month will notice right away if it’s not there.

When it comes to pet food, a large portion of your customers regularly order the same items. From a logistics standpoint, that’s a godsend, because it makes demand predictable. At the same time, it’s more unforgiving than one-time sales: anyone who buys the same food every month will notice immediately if it’s not available one time.

Predictability is your greatest advantage

Repeat customers provide you with a baseline volume that you can calculate. This gives you a better idea of what to keep in stock than an online store that relies solely on one-time sales. Use this information when dealing with your supplier as well.

Saying "no" costs you more than an order

A customer who can't order their regular food will look for an alternative and often won't return. For products with a loyal customer base, availability is therefore more important than for the rest of your product lineup.

Set a minimum threshold for each item

Please take your delivery time into account

Your minimum lead time should match how long it takes your supplier to fulfill the order. A two-week buffer won't help if you're waiting six weeks for a delivery yourself. This is the calculation that's most often overlooked.

Peaks also occur in steady demand

Repeat customers don't place orders evenly throughout the month. If some of your customers place orders around the same date, you'll see spikes that aren't reflected in a monthly average. That's why you should look at the data on a weekly basis.

Replacing an item is risky

Delivery on a schedule

Notify us of your deliveries so the warehouse can schedule them. For a product line with steady demand, restocking is just as important as shipping.
